Patients hospitalized for medical illnesses may develop a "low sodium syndrome" due either to sodium depletion or to the presence of an inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. This can be further aggravated by a low sodium diet and can lead to an acute psychotic reaction. Psychiatric consultants should be alert to this possibility and should recommend appropriate electrolyte replacement as treatment for the psychosis.Abstract Teaser
