The psychological determinants of campus disorders can in part be understood in terms of unresponsive and inaccessible adult leaders—in the home, the university, and government. A fundamental problem centers around the failure of these adult leaders to listen to youth, to spend sufficient time with them, and thus to recognize and affirm their worth as human beings. The author discusses various levels of emotional response evoked in students by the remote leader and, based on this formulation, offers eight specific recommendations for working effectively with youth.Abstract Teaser
