Abstract

Problems in the treatment of transsexualism, a unique disorder of psychosexual orientation, stem in part from physicians' difficulty in differentiating between it and other psychosexual disorders with similar features and from the physicians' unsympathetic attitudes. The author cites studies indicating that traditional psychotherapies have been unsuccessful in altering gender identity once it is established and points out the general success of the sex-conversion operation.
