Meratran and Frenquel were administered by a double-blind procedure to 63 chronic psychotics whose behavior was rated by psychiatric residents, nurses, and aides. Frenquel produced no significant changes in the rated behavior. Meratran seemed to exacerbate social withdrawal and irresponsibility. Meratran failed to increase the over-all activity level and failed to decrease depressive symptoms. Finally, Meratran had a significant tendency to aggravate perceptual distortion in some patients but also counteracted hallucinatory phenomena and disorientation in a few other patients.Abstract Teaser
