Professional Standards Review Organizations: The Current Scene
Abstract
In October 1972, President Nixon signed into law Public Law 92-603, a section of which calls for mandatory utilization review of inpatient medical services rendered to Medicare and Medicaid patients and beneficiaries of Maternal and Child Health programs. This article reviews the law’s history, requirements, and means ofimplementation; it also discusses the medical profession’s response and activities thus far and the implications of the law for psychiatry.
